Honestly I'm not able to enjoy a lot of these romhacks because of the obligitory difficulty increase they have. Yes I like a challenge, but most of the 'challenging' romhacks just increase the levels of the trainers you fight and nothing else. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of spending 75% of the game grinding. I've ended up putting down a lot of otherwise great romhacks because of this issue. Snakewood and Light Platinum were two of those. Now I haven't played all these romhacks, but Liquid Crystal is one that handles increased difficulty pretty well.
(As a disclaimer I'm not super far into the game.) The game increases the level of wild Pokemon to help match the increased trainer levels, and the trainers have better AI such as being more likely to switch and use healing items. You do have to grind a good bit still, but it's not nearly as bad, tolerable enough to do without the speedup function. (Downfalls of playing on actual hardware.) The game still has its dick moments though. I'm looking at you Azalea town double rival fight.

Yeah, I hate how every single hacker thinks they have to add a massive difficulty increase. I mean, sure, the main series games were really easy, but there are other ways to increase difficulty like Blue Kaizo did with the new puzzles and things.

Increased difficulty is great, but it's very poorly handled. If you like Liquid Crystal, though, try Intense Indigo Edition.
All of your Pokemon are at level 100 by the third gym so it seems like it would be easy, but everyone else's Pokemon are level 100 as well. Because of this, the difficulty comes from Stat EXP and strategy instead of grinding for a couple hours on level 20s so you can fight that one trainer with level 70s cough cough Dark Rising • • • •. I'm surprised that nobody here has mentioned Pokemon Prism at all. It got hit with the C&D from Nintendo, yes, but someone leaked a near-finished version and I'm pretty sure another group, unaffiliated with the original dev team, are still working on it. It's in the style of Crystal but brings in the Fairy type, physical/special split, Larvitar as the starter Pokemon, a lot of Pokemon up to Gen 4, character customization, mining and crafting systems, some new moves and a few new Legendaries, as well as a whole new region and story.
And it's got a postgame campaign in what I believe is the region Pokemon Brown was set in, which features a further eight badges, much like the original Gen 2 games let you go back to Kanto. Definitely worth checking out if you can get it anywhere, I really enjoyed it. The maim game of Prism is completely done, the build that was leaked only was missing a few minor post game things and some polishing. Like you said the adoptive parents of the abandoned romchild have been working on updates, I think there's been 2 new major updates so far? My point is that the game is completely playable unless you're a completionist.
